Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock Fundraiser

Kayla accepts a cheque for $700 from Sally Larrington-Brown.

September 2023:

September 10, was a day to remember for Cyclebeat Club and the Canadian Cancer Society. Kayla, a Mill Bay paramedic and volunteer fire fighter, and one of the members of the 'Cops for Cancer' Tour de Rock team, joined us at our studio to lead an amazing one-hour ride. With Kayla's help, we had a full house with a waitlist and we raised an impressive $700 through donations for cancer research and treatment. As we look back on this day, we can't help but feel grateful for our Cyclebeat community and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children battling cancer.

The 'Cops for Cancer' Tour de Rock is an annual fundraising event that sees police officers and emergency responders cycle from the northern tip of Vancouver Island to Victoria in support of paediatric cancer research. As Kayla shared with us, 80% of all funds raised go towards cutting-edge research that develops new strategies, protocols, and harm reduction in cancer treatment. Thanks to this research, the survival rate of childhood leukaemia, once a death sentence, has improved to an 80% survival rate. Additionally, funds go towards fine-tuning treatments for children, so the after-effects of chemotherapy are less devastating, and their quality of life is improved.

Moreover, 20% of the funds raised go towards Camp Goodtimes, a place where children battling or recovering from cancer go with their families to reconnect and get a level of normalcy away from hospitals. Camp Goodtimes provides a supportive and fun environment for children to make new friends, learn new skills, and create lasting memories. Knowing that our fundraiser is contributing to such a worthy cause is incredibly rewarding and motivating for our Cyclebeat community.

At Cyclebeat, we believe in the power of community to bring about positive change, and events like this fundraiser remind us of the strength and generosity of our community. Thank you to Kayla and all those who continue to fight for meaningful change in the fight against cancer.
